Conclusions

The dyadic, longitudinal approach of the empirical study comprising the four cases demonstrates the analytical usefulness of the power base framework for the study of power dynamics in buyer-supplier relationships. Accordingly, the power base framework considers power asymmetry as a configu-ration of coercive, legitimate, reward, expert, referent and informational power dimensions. The empirical study shows that the power dimensions are a means for providing a more nuanced portrait of power asymmetry by depicting explicitly each actor’s relative strength according each power dimension. Furthermore, the application of power dimensions as an analytical tool seems not to impose a choice of focus either on that between the buyer and the supplier, or that between the structural and behavioural side of power. Rather, it provides a synthesising approach (see Figure 2.1) in connecting power asymmetry to 1) the actors of buyer and supplier, and their characteristics, perceptions and interpretations, as well as 2) behavioural and structural power related actions, within and outside the focal relationships, in which the buyer and supplier engage, that manifest themselves in power dynamics.
